What To Do In Case Of Fire? Fire can start anywhere. In the events of a fire incident, do you know what to do? How should you react? Let's look at some very basic procedures you may observe in the events of a fire outbreak. In school or workplace:
| - | Do not panic. | - | Inform any adults. | - | | Activate the fire alarm by breaking the glass of the "manual call-point" or call 995. | | - | Follow your organisation emergency evacuation procedure. | - | Look for the nearest safety exit and move out of the affected in an orderly manner. | - | If the fire is sustainable, use appropriate and available fire extinguisher to stop the fire from growing. | - | Ensure that no casualties are trap or fall behind. |
At home :
| - | Do not panic. Gather all family members together. | - | If the fire is small, use an appropriate fire extinguisher to put out the fire. | | | - | If the fire is beyond control, look for the nearest exit and leave the affected unit immediately. | - | Knock at your neighbours' doors and shout 'Fire!' to alert them. | - | Move to the ground floor or safer area in an orderly manner. | - | If possible, help those in need to move to safety. | - | Call 995 for SCDF immediately. | Do NOT carry any bulky belongings as they may slow down your intention to escape the fire. In the room :
| - | Open the windows (if there is) and shout for help. | - | Cover the gap below the door with a damp towel to prevent smoke from coming in. | - | Do NOT jump down from the building until help arrived |
In building :
| - | Stop whatever you are doing and exit from the nearest and the fastest exit immediately. Do not delay | When you are moving away from fire... If you need to escape through the smoke, crawl down low. In case of an electrical fire: - | If an electrical fire starts at a wall outlet, pull the plug or turn off the switch. Call the fire station, give them your address and tell them it's an electrical fire. If the fire is small, use your home fire extinguisher. | | | - | Never used water to put out an electrical fire. | - | If the fire is big, call the fire station and try to turn off the main power source. | - | Do not try to put out the fire yourself. |
Personal Safety
You may try to put out the fire using an appropriate fire extinguisher if the fire is small. However, Do NOT continue to fight a fire if... - | It is dangerous to do so. | - | There is a possibility that the escape route may be cut off by fire or smoke. | - | The fire continues to grow in spite of your efforts to extinguish it. | - | There are any gas cylinders threatened by the fire. | Do NOT use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire involving burning gas. Turn off the gas supply if it is safe to do so or leave such fire to the SCDF. Evacuate from the affected area if the fire is already spreading quickly. Close all windows and doors behind you whenever possible to slow down the spreading process.
