Steps
- 1Reserve a bathroom space. If the elderly person is in a retirement home, they'll be most likely to have a bathroom with a bath. Not a shower!.
2
- Let the bath fill itself with moderately hot water. Remind that boiling hot baths hurt elderly people.
- 3The bathtub is full now. Escort the elderly person to the bathroom.
- 4Help the elderly person undress and escort him into the bath.
- 5Let them sit down. Don't let them stand up; sitting reduces risks.
- 6If the elderly person is able to wash him or herself, ignore the next few steps.
- 7Carefully wash the elderly person's skin. Use non-perfumed or use hypo-allergenic shower gel or what product you are using.
- 8Wash the hair with a neutral shampoo. Perfumed shampoo is irritating on the skin.
- 9When you're done, carefully escort the elderly person out of the tub and dry him or her up with a soft towel. Don't use anything too rough.
- 10You are done now. Great job!
Tips
- If accessible, use anti-slip carpets inside and outside of the bathtub.
- If the elderly person washes himself, apply handles to the walls so the person casn lift himself or herself easily out and in of the tub.
