How to make hot and cold compress

How to Make A Simple Hot Compress for Muscle Pain

Make A Simple Hot Compress for Muscle Pain

Make a hot compress to soothe aching muscles from just the towels in your home and some hot water.

Step
1.Heat up some water. Don't heat it to boiling, as that will be too hot.

  1. 2
Fold a towel up so that it is large enough to cover only the area you want to place the compress on.

  2. 3
Dip the folded towel into the pot of hot water or pour the water onto the towel carefully. Don't burn yourself.

  3. 4
Test the towel to make sure it isn't too hot to place on your skin.

  4. 5
Place it on the affected region. Relax.

  5. 6
Resoak the towel when it cools off if you need some more time to relax.

Tips

  • Squeeze excess water out of the towel before using so water doesn't drip all over the place.
  • Try a little gentle stretching after the towel has done its magic.

Warnings

  • Don't burn yourself with hot water on the towel.
  • Never use a hot compress or other heating methods on an acute injury (within 18-21 days of the injury). It will increase blood flow to the area, which, if recently injured, will lead to increased inflammation and secondary tissue damage. In other words, heat will make a recent injury 'flare up' and take longer to heal. Use ice or a cold compress if the soreness is the result of a recent injury.

Things You'll Need

  • A hand towel
  • A container of water
  • A stove or microwave
